MIKE SCYPHERS, CAMP DIRECTOR

Mike Scyphers brings a wealth of expertise, knowledge and experience to the camp scene. He has been officiating over the span of the last 5 decades. Mike started his officiating career after playing 4 years of college basketball at Cal State University, Northridge.

In just a short time, he was invited to a Pac 10 tryout camp in 1982 in which he was hired into the conference. From there, Scyphers has gone on to officiate over 1600 Men’s Division 1 basketball games. He has worked 20 Men’s NCAA Division 1 tournaments. In those 20 years, he has whistled over 30 tournament games highlighted by an East Regional Final in 2007 played by North Carolina and Georgetown. He currently officiates in 6 different Division 1 conferences: Pac 12, Mountain West, West Coast, Big West, Western Athletic, and Big Sky. Scyphers has officiated 19 Big West Conference Tournament Championship games as well as several PAC, MWC, and WCC conference tournaments.

Scyphers’ professional career was that of an educator at Simi Valley High School for 37 years. His background in education has made him an excellent presenter and teacher the last several years at the Western Officiating Consortium basketball clinics held for all Division 1 officials in the Western United States.

He was also regarded as one the top high school baseball coaches in Southern California during his 17 year stint. His teams of 1986 & 1993 were ranked #1 nationally.

Mike and his wife Sally reside in Camarillo. They have 3 grown children, Kelly (Keith), Krista, and Brett. They are also proud grandparents of 3 children.

ANDY COHN, ASSISTANT CAMP DIRECTOR

Andy Cohn has been officiating basketball for the last 24 years. He began in the San Fernando Valley High School Unit where he still has his roots as an instructor.

Andy has worked 4 CIF Finals. Collegiately he has officiated in the State JC, GSAC and CCAA Tournament Finals. Andy was also selected to work the NCAA D2 regionals.

The highlight of his career came in 2010 when he was hired into the Big West Conference where he has worked the conference tournament the last 4 years.

Andy has had a successful professional career in the office products industry for the last 35 years.

He and his wife Vivian live in Woodland Hills, CA. They have 2 adult children, Andrea and Kevin and one grandchild, Tyler

Levon Zakarian, Camp Staff

 

Levon Zakarian is a well rounded official who has a wide variety of experience and comprehension of the game. His understanding in this area has made him a strong camp leader, where he thoroughly enjoys sharing his knowledge for the game.

After years of playing competitive basketball his love of the game took him towards the officiating route. He started his career in the high school realm. He has worked in the Division II and III with over 15+ years of experience and has worked multiple playoffs. He was then hired on to Division I in 2009.

Levon has enriched his experience with working Division I conference tournaments for the last 5 years.

Levon’s professional career has included coaching high school football, basketball and baseball. He enjoys teaching and guiding individuals to become the best they can, especially his students. It’s become second nature to him to mentor and help fellow officials with his teaching background.

He and his wife, Taleen reside in Sherman Oaks California with their 2 Twin boys.

Fred Babadjanians, Camp Staff

Fred has been officiating basketball for the last 14 years. Fred is heavily involved in the San Fernando Unit having served on the Board of Directors, the Instructional Staff, as well as the Rating Committee. He brings 10 years of High School Varsity coaching experience to the court.

Fred has worked 4 consecutive CIF Finals, including the Open Division State Championship game in 2015. Collegiately, he has officiated in the WSC, OEC, SCC, FAC, SCIAC, GSAC, CALPAC, CCAA, PACWEST, and RMAC conferences.

Fred has also worked for the NBA as an observer.

He and his wife, Aileen reside in Tujunga, California with their 2 children. Fred has been self-employed all of his career running a computer consulting firm.
